Pa. lawmaker seeks co-sponsors for ‘any willing insurer’ legislation to push Highmark, UPMC together

Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa, D-Forest Hills, is seeking co-sponsors on legislation which “would require UPMC and Highmark to either contract with each other for services or enter mandatory arbitration,” according to a release circulated Wednesday.

While not even in bill form yet, the move is another sign of growing interest from Harrisburg as the Pittsburgh region moves into the final months of a five-year agreement that has allowed some Highmark Medicare Advantage members and others continued in-network access to UPMC hospitals.

UPMC touts plans to expand beyond Pa. amid near-record earnings

Fresh off two of its best earnings quarters in years, UPMC is moving on ambitious plans to expand its health care provider and insurance arms across Pennsylvania and into neighboring states, the nonprofit system’s chief operating officer said Thursday.

“We’re running out of room in Pennsylvania,” said Leslie Davis, UPMC’s executive vice president and chief operating officer of its health services division. “When you think about how close (UPMC) Hamot is to New York, how close (UPMC) Jameson is to Ohio, how close (UPMC) Altoona is to western Maryland … we see ourselves growing more and more over the next few years.”

Station Square’s $30 million upgrade includes 5 to 7 new restaurants

UPMC is moving in, five to seven restaurants are being added, and the mezzanine level is being eliminated in Station Square’s Freight House Shops in a $30 million revitalization of the South Side entertainment, office, and retail complex.

As part of the makeover, UPMC will be taking about 37,000 square feet of space in the southeast corner of the Freight House Shops — or about a third of the building — starting next July.

UPMC unveils sweeping $2 billion plan to build 3 hospitals in Pittsburgh

Health giant UPMC announced Friday it will invest $2 billion as part of a monumental expansion that includes building three specialty hospitals in Pittsburgh focused on cancer, organ transplants, and heart and vision care.

UPMC President and CEO Jeffrey Romoff said the hospitals will be built on the campuses of UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland, UPMC Mercy in Uptown and UPMC Shadyside.

UPMC, ‘a heavyweight’ with ‘fresh legs,’ continues its expansion in Pennsylvania

With the stroke of a pen, UPMC has acquired seven hospitals in Central Pennsylvania, with plans to buy an eighth hospital in York and build a 90-bed hospital in South Fayette Township — fueling the biggest expansion in the Pittsburgh health care giant’s 27-year history.

The deal to acquire Harrisburg-based Pinnacle Health System comes within a week of UPMC getting municipal approval to build a $211.2 million hospital in South Fayette. The health system already operates about 20 hospitals, mostly in Western Pennsylvania.
